Quick Garlic Planting Guide

  1. Prepare soil by digging in plenty of sheep manure and organic mulch at least a week before planting. Remove any rocks or large stones.
  2. Warmer climates* ONLY: refridgerate bulbs for 3 days prior to planting to improve consistency of shooting.
  3. Seperate and soak cloves overnight in Seasol prior to planting. (Dilute to manufacturers instructions).
  4. Plant bulbs tips to the sky and thumb (5-8cm) deep, 15-20cm apart, in rows spaced 20cm apart.
  5. Cover lightly with soil and straw/mulch to deter weeds and label your varieties!
  6. Water in with an organic fertiliser or seaweed emulsion (eg. Seasol).
  7. Feed monthly and water regularly to keep the soil moist but not wet.
  8. Weed periodically so garlic doesn’t have to compete with weeds.
  9. Harvest when 4.5 green leaves remain and clove bumps are well defined.
  10. Lift bulbs from underneath with a garden fork.

*Warmer climates include: warm temperate zones where there are no frosts, sub-tropical and tropical regions.

How to store garlic bulb planting packs prior to planting

Store your garlic bulbs in a cool dry place, out of direct sun but not in the dark, and definitely not in the fridge. Garlic needs a stable temperature of between 16-20 degrees C.

Expected storage time: Long (around 10-12 months in cool, dry conditions). Storage information. Note, 2022 harvest was late-December.

FAQ

Is there any difference between seed garlic and regular garlic bulbs?

Essentially, no. Australian grown seed garlic from suppliers that don’t use chemicals is perfectly edible. Conversely, any garlic that has not been sprayed can be used for planting. Know your suppliers – supermarket garlic has almost always been sprayed and the variety is not usually identified. For best results, seed garlic should be the best of the crop, and plant only the largest cloves in the bulb. The larger the clove as seed, the larger the garlic bulb that grows from it.
