Natural Farming Methods
Our farm’s planting and harvest calendar is typical for Victorian garlic. We plant in April-May and harvest in late November-December. We plant, weed, harvest and clean each bulb by hand.
We use biodegradeable weed matting which helps support our natural approach to weed control – no herbicides or chemicals! Otherwise, at our farm we plant and weed by hand. It’s labour intensive but the result is premium produce that is full of flavour.
Soil condition is improved only with chicken and sheep manure, organic matter and organic seaweed fertiliser. Again, no chemicals or artificial fertilisers are used in our farm’s garlic patch. We do use machinery to help prepare the growing beds and to mow the surrounding weeds.
We aspire to be doing fully organic farming, although we’re not certified yet. The paddock itself has never been cropped, it normally only runs a few sheep every spring to keep the grass and weeds down.
As for packaging of your orders, we don’t use plastic. To ensure the product can remain dry in transit, we use paper, paper tape and cardboard – all biodegradeable in your compost.
